At 19, political science college student Rebecca Barrett thought she was too young to do little more than volunteer for a campaign.

But another young party activist encouraged her and today, the young Obama fan from Concord is running for a seat on the Contra Costa Democratic Party Central Committee and serving as the co-youth outreach coordinator for the Lamorinda Democrats.

“The more I thought about it, I realized that the party really does need people our age in leadership positions, what with everything going on with education cuts and other policy decisions that affect us,” Barrett said.

“Young people do care about politics and a lot of people have been turned on by this election.”

My friend and young woman I’ve been mentoring, Rebecca Barrett is running for Democratic County Central Committee in Contra Costa. I first met Rebecca when she was in high school and volunteered for me at the Contra Costa United Democratic Campaign in 2006. She impressed me immediately with her dedication for Democratic Party values and her tremendous work ethic. Her high school friends even named a Facebook group after her entitled, “Everything I know about Politics I learned from Rebecca”

After the campaign was over, we remained friends and at my new job for Speaker Nancy Pelosi, I helped her get an internship with the congresswoman in the district office where I work. While she was interning in my office we started talking about the DCCC. Since I had worked in Contra Costa and had a good handle on the politics in that county I knew Rebecca would be a tremendous asset to the Party. I advised her to run for Central Committee and she accepted the challenge! So it’s my proud pleasure to introduce her to the Calitics community and ask that everyone reading this votes for this amazing Young Democrat and please tell all your 4^th District Contra Costa friends to vote for her too. Take a look at her first speech and you’ll agree with me that it’s the right thing to do. I know that we’ll be seeing more of Rebecca Barrett in the bright future that is ahead of her.

The next party is going to be for my 30th birthday and will also be my “official” campaign kick-off. Everyone is invited! It will be taking place at Medjool, the local yummy Mission restaurant and lounge that supports progressive candidates like myself. Come check it out!

Nicole Sarabia Rivera currently works for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi as a field represenative. She helped found Good Ol’ Girls, a progressive political and social networking group. In 2006 she formed lefton580.org (no longer active website) that organized a ride board to help get volunteers out to Jerry McNerney’s district. She helped with the Democratic Party of Orange County’s Next Leaders Program (see video), Tom Umberg’s campaign for Orange County Supervisor, and Lou Correa’s victorious campaign for Senate.
